“This film was made by the children of the Petit Nanterre neighborhood,” says the title card that opens it. For one month in the summer of 2023, with Zy'Va and mOst, they took headphones, microphones, and cameras for the “documentary portraits” workshop: walking between the towers, stopping passersby, asking their questions.
The answers sketch the neighborhood: a “human” wealth rather than a money one, the summer of riots that followed Nahel’s death, the volunteers and community work, a rescued magpie, the iguana on the green balcony. Then the inquiry goes back in time with those who lived it: the shantytowns until 1964, the transit housing estates, the workers’ hostel and its social café.
The following winter, a “les visages du petit nanterre” banner was hung on the neighborhood’s fences, around the sports court and the park. Its QR code opened the film.
